How is everyone’s 2018 going? Mine is going pretty well so far. I didn’t realize until talking with a friend on Friday night that I haven’t made any resolutions for the year. I jotted a few down on my phone on the 2nd but never made them public or fully developed them.

I accomplished several of my resolutions from last year. This year I only have a few:

Use my phone less. I have turned off all of my notifications which has helped a ton but I’m still really bad about using my phone as a security blanket when I either don’t want to or don’t know how to interact with people. It’s a really bad habit because it’s distracting and takes me out of the present moment.

Exercise more. This is always a given but I’d really like to do it. I walk 40 minutes a day on my journey to and from work, but once it warms up I’d really like to start running and hiking more often.

Read+Write more. Last year one of my goals was to engage in a creative endeavor and failed quite miserably. I have a few episodes of a podcast written out and a few topics I’d like to write about. I also began reading more last year and was able to read some Camus, Jack London, and a few others. I’ve already started another Camus book (The First Man) and have a few others lined up so I’m on the right track. I would really like to get back in to going to see films as well.

Finally, I hope to explore the city more. I take living in NYC for granted and only spend my time in Riverdale and Washington Heights. I really need to get out to Brooklyn, Queens, and lower Manhattan. Again, when it warms up a bit.

This is a short post because I have something a little more philosophical to talk about in my next post.

My 2014 Weight Loss Challenge!

Hello all! I am joining a weight loss challenge to help me accomplish my resolution to lose 20 pounds this year! Carolinafitness has created this challenge in order to help bloggers hold each other accountable for their weight loss goals and resolutions, and I couldn’t think of a better way to keep my head in the game, so to speak. Below is my bio and weight loss goal for the challenge! If you want to join, comment on the post I linked above and then post your own bio and goal on your blog, before the 15th of this month!

My bio and goals:

Hi! I’m Anna, I’m 25, and I’m currently a PhD student studying European History. I grew up as an Army brat in Ft. Benning, Georgia, Mililani, Hawaii, and then Tulsa, Oklahoma, but I now reside in Dallas, Texas. I was a super tomboy as a kid and very active until my senior year of high school, when I began concurrently attending college. As my academic responsibilities increased over the years, my urge and ability to be active has decreased. During the summer I am really responsible about my eating habits and activity level, but during the school year, while I maintain healthy eating habits, I always find excuses not to work out. Also, admittedly, I am an emotional eater and whenever I am lonely, sad, or angry I usually go to food for comfort. My favorite outdoor activities include hiking, geocaching, swimming, running, and snorkeling (when I’m in a location that allows it)! While I don’t mind going to the gym, I am a sucker for cardio activities and really do not enjoy lifting weights (something I am trying to change). My other hobbies include cooking, drinking wine, watching movies, blogging, and listening to music. I am 5′ 5″ and my goal weight is 125-130 lbs. I reach my goal every summer, but throughout the academic year I always gain back the weight I’ve lost. So, my goal for 2014 is to reach 125 lbs as quickly as possible AND maintain it for as long as possible! In order to reach and maintain my goal I will be using this challenge to hold myself accountable and the Fitbit One to monitor my activity levels and encourage me to be more active. I will also try very hard to keep a food journal on the Fitbit site, so make sure to follow me (click the hyperlink above)!

A New Year, A New…

Happy New Year everyone! Thanks for reading along so far and I hope in the coming year more of you will join me! Now, this will be short and sweet, but I am curious about everyone’s resolutions! I always make resolutions, but never keep them…I am almost always successful with my Lenten fasts and resolutions, but New Years resolutions never stick. I always want to lose weight/get in shape and I always want to travel and try new things, but it never seems to happen. Maybe it’s because no one is there to enforce them or maybe I’m just lazy, who knows! This year I will list my top resolutions for 2014 and I will keep you guys updated on my successes/failures throughout the year! You can help hold me accountable and shame me when I ultimately fail, haha! Good luck with your resolutions if you have any, and have a happy and prosperous 2014 everyone!

1. Lose 20 pounds and/or workout more than once a week

2. Become fluent in Italian, maintain my Spanish, and begin learning French (I’m kind of cheating for this one because I’m already enrolled in classes for French and Italian)

3. Return to Italy for at least 2 weeks

4. Go to mass at least once a month (I’m going to shoot for 3 times a month, but I have to be realistic…)

5. Make at least 6 new friends

6. Go to SxSW or  any other music or film festival

7. Get my blog/vlog rolling

8. Read at least 6 books cover to cover

9. Go on a trip with a friend

10. Pay off at least half of my student debt

11. Volunteer at least once, but try to volunteer at least 6 times

12. Stop gossiping, cursing, and other bad habits

13. Learn a new recipe a week

14. Learn to drive stick shift
